How To Find A Good Dentist...

Ask 100 dentists how to find a good dentist in your area and one of the most common answers will usually be:

Look for a dentist with a clean office and a professional staff.

Your could ask family and friends for guidance. You could also check out your local Better Business Bureau. But in the end, this is a subjective question.

A friend or family member may like a particular dentist with whom they have a certain comfort level, because they have been going to that dentist for many years and are reluctant to change. While this may be a good place to start, it would be advisable to visit the dental office first, before making an appointment.

Visit a dental office and ask questions. Does the staff seem knowledgeable and courteous? Do they seem happy and friendly. Ask how long they've worked for the dentist. Low turnover is a good sign.

Also, it makes sense that a "private practice dentist" who works for himself or herself has a greater incentive to please their clients in order to build repeat business.

Certainly large dental chains have quality dentists, but their motivation may not be the same. Dental chains are known to give their dentists "quotas," requiring employee-dentists to produce an average of "x" amount of dollars per patient. Obviously, this could result in a recommendation for treatment that may or may not be necessary.

A clean office and professional staff indicates a dentist who demands a certain level of excellence and one that consumers should seek out when looking for a new dentist.

Good Dental Office Procedures...

A good dentist should take a preventative approach. On your first visit, the dentist should inquire about your medical and dental history, and perform a complete dental exam, including a full-mouth x-ray.

A good dentist should provide you with the adequate knowledge on how to take care of your teeth and the essential steps of good oral hygiene.

Your dentist and dental hygienist should practice good hygiene and take proper care against infection. They should wear rubber gloves and a mask when treating their patients.

Don't be afraid to ask about sanitary procedures. Your dentist should be happy to explain and point out examples of office sanitary procedures.
