Frequently Asked Questions
PLAN INFORMATION
How does it work?
The Careington Care 500 plan is a simple savings solution for veterans and their families. A list of discounted prices has been negotiated ahead of time with our dentists for all officially recognized dental procedures, including everything from basic cleanings and exams to major work like crowns and root canals. When you become a member, you automatically receive access to those discounted prices. When you present your card at any in-network dentist, they will charge you only those prices.
This dental insurance alternative was created in 1979 by two dentists who wanted to create an easy way for individuals to save money on their dental care without paying high premiums or having to deal with limits and waiting times. Click here for more information on how it works.
How soon can I use my plan?
You receive a temporary ID immediately upon completing your application. This temporary ID is active until your official card arrives, which is usually within 7-15 business days.
Do I have to be a veteran to purchase this plan?
Nope! The Careington Care 500 plan is available to anyone to purchase. However, it’s an especially helpful option for veterans because it doesn’t have any limits, waiting periods or paperwork, which most traditional dental plans have. In addition, it is straightforward and affordable. Many of our members since Careington began in 1979 have been veterans.
How do I know what I will pay at the dental office?
Our plans save you 20-60% on your dental work. Your exact savings depend on the procedures being performed. Click here to see the full price list.
Your first appointment and routine visits usually consist of an exam, cleaning and X-ray. Procedures that do not appear on the price list or that are performed by a specialist, such as an endodontist or periodontist, are discounted at 20% off.
What is your refund policy?
We are confident that you will be satisfied with your dental plan membership. However, in the event that you are not satisfied, you can cancel in 30 days and receive a full refund, less your processing fee.

We have a dentist search page for your convenience. You can also call our customer care representatives during business hours at (888) 224-6829.
How often can I have my teeth cleaned?
Any time you like! Our fixed discounted prices are unlimited.
When do I receive a card?
You can print the temporary ID for immediate use at the end of the online application process, or if you call (888) 224-6829 for assistance, our U.S.-based representatives can walk you through the application. You will receive your permanent ID cards in the mail after 7 to 15 business days.
Can I use my dental discount plan with another plan?
As far as we’re concerned, yes! But it usually depends on the policies of your other plan and of your dental office.
If your insurance company accepts reimbursement claim forms, you may be able to show your Careington Care 500 membership card to an in-network dentist, pay the discounted fees for the dental work you receive and then get a copy of your bill. Once you’ve done this, you can file a claim with your insurance company so they can reimburse you for what you spent. This will reduce your out-of-pocket expenses and stretch your dollar so you can hit your insurance plan’s maximums more slowly. You would definitely want to check with your dentist and your insurance company first.
A second (much more common) way many members use our discount dental plan is to reduce their costs on their dental procedures after hitting their annual maximum on their dental insurance, since our plan has no limits on use.
A third option is that if your other plan has a waiting period before you can use it for major work, you can use our plan in the meantime to save money on procedures like crowns, root canals and braces.
ABOUT CAREINGTON
Careington is one of the oldest and most-recognized dental plan companies in the nation. In 1979, two doctors saw a need in the industry for a member network that would help both companies and individuals. Many people could not find quality dental plans unless they were with a specific kind of employer and had been employed for a certain length of time, so Careington wanted to fill that gap. A group of dentists agreed to join the Careington network and lower their fees for its members, and so the Careington dental plan was created, which now has millions of members nationwide.

OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH RIP MEDICAL DEBT
How does getting a dental plan through Veterans Dental contribute to ending veteran medical debt?
When you get a dental plan through Veterans Dental, we donate to forgive $1,000 of U.S. veteran medical debt through the RIP Medical Debt Veterans Program.
Many veterans face not only inadequate dental care but also medical debt that outlasts their VA benefits. Veterans with severe PTSD often struggle to find jobs that pay enough to cover their medical bills.
RIP Medical Debt purchases veterans’ medical debt for pennies on the dollar and forgives it, releasing veterans from unpayable burdens and improving their credit scores.
When is the money donated to RIP Medical Debt?
We make donations at the beginning of each month.
